Sports was reintroduced at VCS middle schools and SMS in 2006 with basketball in a two year pilot program. But many former SMS students have made a name for themselves as athletes at DeLand High and beyond. Here are some of them:
William "Tra" Thomas, football
William was a distinguished player at Florida State Univeristy and a standout with the Philadelphia Eagles, including being a Pro Bowl selection. By the way, William's mother was a student here and teaches at SMS now!
Bridgette Gordon, basketball

A two time national champion and an Olympic gold medal winner, Bridgette Gordon is an inductee for the UT Hall of Fame.

Renee Bellamy, basketball
Renee is the all time leader in assists at the University of South Florida.
Oliver Lee, basketball
Played at Marquette University '78 - '81 and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1981. Check out this article listing Oliver Lee as a teammate of Doc Rivers and a memorable victory over Notre Dame.
